Post Therapy Tips

Sometimes therapy sessions can get you a little down. Sometimes the memories and emotions can be overwhelming so here are a few things I do after therapy to self-soothe.

  1. Give yourself something to look forward to. For me, that looks like trying a new recipe, taking myself to lunch or dinner, or scheduling a massage.

  2. Aromatherapy & Jazz. I think this works for me because it forces me to slow down and breathe (sometimes I catch myself holding my breath unprovoked, so that’s super necessary). There are so many great jazz playlists readily available. Pair that with a lavender or eucalyptus shower steamer or a nice bath bomb, light some candles and relax.

  3. Art without an end goal. Most of the time if I’m going to paint, I think of what I want the finished product to be and work towards it, but I found that painting with no plan is very soothing post-therapy. It doesn’t have to be ‘good’ or ‘perfect’, it just has to be a space for release and expression.

  4. Move your body. It can be a workout, a nice long walk, or a good yoga session (you can find some on YouTube but be mindful that some deep stretches can cause an emotional release).

  5. Remind yourself that you are okay and you are not currently living in the traumatic experiences. You are not there anymore. Sometimes I repeat to myself ‘I’m safe, everything’s okay’ and that calms my nerves and reassures me.

Everyone will have their own unique ways that they self soothe. I don’t think there’s a right or wrong way, but I do think it’s extremely important to give yourself space post-therapy before rushing back into your responsibilities, which sometimes adds more stress than you need when therapy has left you in an emotional/vulnerable state.

Be kind to yourself. You’re doing better than you think. Happy healing and thanks for reading.
